Crowns and bridgework are the cornerstones of dental restorations and a process with which many people are familiar. Traditionally these restorations were made entirely from metal resulting in a “gold” or “silver” tooth. Both metals are still used in crown and bridgework, but a new and popular option is aesthetic porcelain which looks and feels like your natural teeth.

Porcelain crowns completely cover the exposed tooth structure all the way down to the gum line. They are often used to repair teeth that have undergone root canal treatment or have broken down from decay or a fracture too extensive to be restored by a filling only.

A porcelain crown is created in the laboratory, specially designed and crafted to blend with your natural teeth. The shade of porcelain is carefully selected to match your surrounding teeth, making the crown appear natural and undetectable. Having a customized crown made takes two or three appointments. The tooth is carefully prepared and impressions are taken to create a perfect fit.

If you are missing one tooth or multiple teeth in an area, a bridge may be a good option. Bridgework consists of one or more crowns (called pontics) that replace missing teeth and are anchored to the adjacent teeth (called abutments) on either end of the span. The materials used for creating a bridge are similar to those of a crown, allowing a custom shade of porcelain to match your surrounding teeth.

Bridgework allows you to avoid that “sunken” appearance caused by missing teeth and stabilizes that area of the dental arch to give you a more youthful appearance and a more confident smile. Like crowns, once the bridgework is permanently cemented, you can also once again enjoy your favourite foods with confidence.

What is an E-Max Crown?

This is a type of all-ceramic crown with an appealing translucent colour which is combined with extra strength and durability.
This crown is made from a single block of lithium disilicate ceramic: this is a top grade material which has been harvested for its toughness, durability and opaque qualities which makes it a highly prized crown.
Plus it is considered a breakthrough in dental crown technology. You get a glass ceramic crown which is tough and enduring but delicate in appearance.

Advantages of an E-Max Crown

This crown is considered to be the best match with your own natural teeth. The transparent colour and lifelike shape ensures that it is unlikely to be noticed amongst your own natural teeth.
There is no metal alloy base with this crown which means no unsightly looking grey line around the gum line.
They are strong, long lasting and unlikely to crack or fracture as compared to many other types of crowns. They are considered to be at less risk of chipping compared to zirconia crowns

Porcelain Bonded to Metal Crowns

Porcelain bonded to metal crowns are one of the most common tooth coloured type of crown provided in UK. A combination of a very strong metal core surrounded by an outer layer of tooth coloured porcelain allows a crown to be strong but also fairly aesthetic.
Many different types of porcelain bonded to metal crown exist from crowns where the metal is a grey, non precious alloy to crowns where the metal is precious, yellow gold alloy. These yellow gold containing crowns can be made to appear warmer and more natural as the yellow gold alloy shines through mimicking the yellow dentine inside a natural tooth.
Porcelain bonded to metal crowns offer true value for money. Less expensive crowns using grey, non precious metal alloy cannot hope to achieve the high levels of aesthetics required for the crown to truly blend in with the natural teeth and to enhance the smile.

Zirconium Crown

The aesthetic effects alone of a zirconia crown should be the biggest advantage it can give. It is important that you have dental crowns that will look natural especially if it will be placed at the front teeth and will be visible beside the natural teeth.
The capacity of zirconium to be modified according to the set of teeth it will be placed alongside with is very important. A zirconium crown will not only replace a tooth but it can be shaped so that it will look better than the one it will be replacing. This is why you can sport that perfect natural looking smile anytime.
Zirconia manufacturers are now producing and designing dental crowns custom milled from a solid block of the material,  baked at ultra high temperatures to ensure that the finished crowns are almost indestructible.
The fact that this material is biocompatible means that it is safe to stay within your mouth for a long period of  time. There is no need to worry about any adverse reactions from your body because it is not rejected by the human body.
